ACT tutoring

Personalized ACT tutoring, built around your sections

The ACT’s required sections are English, Math and Reading, and the Science section is now an optional add-on rather than a fourth required test. That choice, plus your practice score, shapes what a tutor should actually focus on. Tell us your target composite and which sections you are taking, and the team looks for a tutor who prepares students for the exam as it is administered today.

  • A plan built around your required sections, plus Science if you are taking it
  • One-on-one sessions targeting your specific weaker section
  • A free demo lesson before you decide to continue

What the ACT tests

What ACT tutoring covers

English, Math and Reading are required for every student; Science is now an optional section taken for an additional fee and reported separately from your composite. Say which sections apply to you so a tutor can plan accordingly.

English

  • Grammar, usage and punctuation
  • Sentence structure
  • Rhetorical skills — organization, style and strategy

Math

  • Pre-algebra and elementary algebra
  • Intermediate algebra and coordinate geometry
  • Plane geometry and trigonometry
  • Working within a four-answer-choice format

Reading

  • Reading comprehension across multiple passage types
  • Identifying main ideas and supporting evidence
  • Managing time across several passages in one section

Science (optional)

Science is scored separately and does not affect your composite. It is worth taking if a target school considers it or if your STEM score (the average of Math and Science) would help your application.

  • Interpreting data, graphs and tables
  • Evaluating experimental design
  • Comparing conflicting scientific viewpoints
  • No deep recall of specific science content required

Bring a recent ACT or practice test score if you have one, along with which sections you plan to take, so the team can confirm whether a suitable tutor is available.

Which ACT sections you actually need

The four ACT sections shown as four columns. English, Math and Reading are each marked Required; Science is marked Optional. Each column lists what it covers: English grammar, sentence structure and rhetorical skills; Math from pre-algebra through trigonometry; Reading comprehension, analysis and vocabulary in context; and Science data analysis, scientific reasoning, graph interpretation and experimental design.
English, Math and Reading are required. Science is optional, so which sections you prepare for depends on what the colleges you are applying to ask for.

Straight answers

What you can expect

  • How matching works

The Prep2Perfection team reviews your request and looks for a suitable tutor, rather than asking families to choose from an unfiltered list.

  • Before you commit

New customers can start with a free demo lesson to meet the tutor and see whether the match feels suitable before continuing.

  • Getting started

The team begins looking for a suitable tutor after receiving your request. Same-day matching may be possible, but it is not guaranteed and depends on the subject, academic level, preferred lesson format, location and tutor availability.

How it works

How ACT tutoring is arranged

  1. Tell us your sections and your target score

Share whether you are taking Science and Writing in addition to the required sections, your target composite, and a recent practice score if you have one.

  2. We look for a suitable tutor

The team reviews your section choices and weaker areas and looks for a tutor who prepares students for the current ACT format, including the optional Science section if you need it.

  3. Start with a free demo lesson

Work through real ACT-style questions from your weakest section. The ACT rewards pacing as much as content knowledge, so a demo lesson under realistic timing shows where the actual problem is.

Questions

Common questions

Is the Science section required?

No. Science is now an optional section available for an additional fee and is reported as a separate score, along with a STEM score that averages your Math and Science results. Your composite score is calculated only from English, Math and Reading. Whether Science is worth taking depends on what your target schools consider, so it is worth checking before you register.

Should my student take the ACT or the SAT?

Both are accepted by essentially all US colleges, so the choice usually comes down to which format suits the student better — the ACT has a more straightforward, less adaptive structure and an optional Science section testing data interpretation, while the SAT is fully digital and adapts within each section. A full-length practice test of each is the most reliable way to compare, and either can be prepared for with tutoring.

I heard the ACT changed its answer choices. Is that true?

Yes — the current ACT Math section uses four answer choices per question rather than the previous five. It is a small change, but worth knowing so practice materials and pacing expectations match the exam you will actually take.

How do we figure out which section needs the most work?

A recent full-length practice test, scored by section, is the clearest way to see this. A tutor can also help interpret an existing score report to identify whether a section score is being pulled down by a content gap, a pacing problem, or both — those need different kinds of practice.

Does tutoring cover the optional Writing section?

It can be requested. Since Writing is optional and not all colleges require it, confirm whether your target schools ask for it before dedicating tutoring time to it specifically.

Can you guarantee a specific composite score?

No. Prep2Perfection does not guarantee a specific score or score increase. A tutor can help you understand the test, target your weaker sections and build an appropriate study plan; the result depends on your starting point and the work put in.
