What a math tutor can help with

Math is not one subject. A student stuck in Algebra 2 needs something different from a student stuck in Calculus II, so the first thing the team asks for is the course name.

Middle school math

  • Fractions, ratios and percents
  • Integers and the number line
  • Expressions and one-step equations
  • Pre-algebra
  • Introductory geometry and measurement

Algebra 1 and Algebra 2

  • Linear equations, inequalities and graphing
  • Systems of equations
  • Factoring and quadratics
  • Exponents, radicals and rational expressions
  • Polynomial and rational functions
  • Logarithms and exponential models
  • Sequences and series

Geometry and trigonometry

  • Proofs and logical reasoning
  • Congruence and similarity
  • Circles, area and volume
  • Coordinate geometry
  • Right-triangle trigonometry
  • The unit circle and trigonometric identities

Precalculus and Calculus

  • Function transformations and composition
  • Limits and continuity
  • Derivatives and their applications
  • Integration and the fundamental theorem
  • Sequences, series and convergence
  • AP Calculus AB and BC coursework

College math

Course-level help for undergraduate classes, where a tutor for that course is available.

  • Calculus I, II and III
  • Linear algebra
  • Differential equations
  • Discrete mathematics
  • Probability and statistics
  • Business and applied calculus

This list is illustrative rather than exhaustive. Include your course name and textbook in the request so the team can confirm whether a suitable tutor is available.

Where your course sits in the math sequence

A flow chart of the US school math sequence: arithmetic to pre-algebra to Algebra 1, which branches into geometry, Algebra 2 and trigonometry, all leading to precalculus and then calculus, which in turn leads on to statistics, linear algebra and differential equations.
Most math difficulty traces back to an earlier step in this sequence, so a tutor starts by finding where the gap actually is.

Straight answers

What you can expect

  • How matching works

The Prep2Perfection team reviews your request and looks for a suitable tutor, rather than asking families to choose from an unfiltered list.

  • Before you commit

New customers can start with a free demo lesson to meet the tutor and see whether the match feels suitable before continuing.

  • If the match is wrong

If the tutor is not the right fit, let the team know and Prep2Perfection will help arrange another suitable match.

  • Who it is for

Tutoring supports students working through difficult material as well as high-performing students who want enrichment, exam preparation or help with more advanced topics.

How it works

How math matching works

  1. Tell us the course and the problem

Complete the short request form with the math course, academic level, preferred lesson format and what specifically is going wrong — one topic, a test coming up, or the whole class.

  2. We look for a suitable tutor

The team reviews your request and looks for a tutor who teaches that course, based on your needs, location and availability, rather than asking you to choose from an unfiltered list.

  3. Start with a free demo lesson

Meet the tutor, work through a real problem from your current class, and decide whether the match feels right before continuing.

Lesson options

Online or in person

Online math tutoring

Lessons run over video with a shared digital whiteboard, which suits math well: a worked solution appears line by line and both people are looking at the same thing. Students need a reliable internet connection and a device that can join the agreed video call.

Best for

  • Specific courses where a local tutor is unlikely
  • Evening and weekend sessions
  • Short-notice help before a test

Local in-person tutoring

Local or in-person tutoring may also be requested. Availability depends on the subject, academic level, location and tutor availability, so it is confirmed while the team looks for your match rather than promised up front.

Best for

  • Younger students who concentrate better alongside a tutor
  • Families who prefer face-to-face sessions

Questions

Common questions

Which math courses can you help with?

Middle school math and pre-algebra; Algebra 1, Geometry, Algebra 2, Precalculus and Calculus at high school level; and undergraduate courses such as Calculus I to III, linear algebra and statistics. Include the course name and your textbook or syllabus in the request so the team can confirm whether a suitable tutor is available.

What is the difference between Algebra 2 help and Precalculus help?

Algebra 2 builds the toolkit: quadratics, polynomials, logarithms and the main function families. Precalculus takes those functions and prepares them for calculus, adding trigonometry, the unit circle and limit-style reasoning. Students who struggle in Precalculus are often missing something from Algebra 2, so a tutor will usually check the earlier material before pushing ahead.

My student is several topics behind. Where does a tutor start?

Usually at the earliest topic that is still unclear. Math builds on itself, so a gap in factoring reappears in every later unit. The first lessons often move backwards before they move forwards, which is normal and usually faster than working around the gap.

Is math tutoring only useful if my student is failing?

No. Tutoring supports students working through difficult material as well as high-performing students who want enrichment, exam preparation or help with more advanced topics such as AP or honors courses.

Can a math tutor help with SAT or ACT math?

Tutoring can cover the math content those tests assess, including algebra, problem solving and data analysis. Mention the test and your timeline in the request so the team knows whether you need course support, test preparation, or both.

How many hours a week does math tutoring usually take?

It depends whether you are repairing a gap, keeping pace with a current class, or preparing for a specific test. Monthly packages are sold in blocks of hours and the hourly rate depends on the block you choose, so the team will talk through what is realistic before you commit.

Do you support college math classes?

Yes — undergraduate courses including Calculus I to III, linear algebra, differential equations, and probability and statistics. Advanced college subjects may be arranged differently from standard packages, so confirm the course with the team when you request a tutor.
