AP Chemistry

AP Chemistry tutors for course and exam prep

AP Chemistry moves through nine units in a single year and expects exam-level answers well before the exam itself — the free-response questions ask you to justify a claim with data, not just calculate a number. Tell us your current unit and whether you need course support, exam preparation, or both, and the team looks for a tutor who teaches this course.

  • Matched to the AP Chemistry course, not general high school chemistry
  • Support for both course units and exam-style question practice
  • A free demo lesson before you decide to continue

Course units

What AP Chemistry tutoring covers

The course moves through these units in roughly this order. Naming your current unit tells a tutor a great deal about which skill — and which earlier unit it depends on — is actually the issue.

Structure and bonding

  • Atomic structure and properties
  • Molecular and ionic compound structure and properties
  • Intermolecular forces and properties

Reactions and kinetics

  • Chemical reactions
  • Kinetics — rate laws and reaction mechanisms

Acids, bases and lab skills

  • Acids and bases, including titrations
  • Interpreting lab and experimental data
  • Free-response questions that require justifying a claim with evidence

Energy and equilibrium

Thermodynamics and equilibrium build directly on each other, and free-response questions frequently combine the two — a common source of the "I understood each unit separately but not together" feeling.

  • Thermodynamics
  • Equilibrium
  • Applications of thermodynamics

This list is illustrative rather than exhaustive. Include your current unit and textbook so the team can confirm whether a suitable tutor is available.

From the course units to an exam answer

An AP Chemistry equilibrium worked example moving from learning to practice to application. For N₂O₄ ⇌ 2 NO₂ with Kᴄ = [NO₂]² ÷ [N₂O₄]: starting from 0.50 M N₂O₄ with [NO₂] = 0.20 M at equilibrium, an ICE table gives 2x = 0.20, so x = 0.10 and [N₂O₄] = 0.40 M, giving Kᴄ = (0.20)² ÷ 0.40 = 0.10. A checklist alongside prompts checking the balanced equation, units, whether the value is reasonable, and significant figures.
AP Chemistry marks are usually lost in setting a problem up, not in the arithmetic — which is why an ICE table earns its place before any number is calculated.

What you can expect

  • How matching works

The Prep2Perfection team reviews your request and looks for a suitable tutor, rather than asking families to choose from an unfiltered list.

  • If the match is wrong

If the tutor is not the right fit, let the team know and Prep2Perfection will help arrange another suitable match.

  • Before you commit

New customers can start with a free demo lesson to meet the tutor and see whether the match feels suitable before continuing.

How it works

How AP Chemistry matching works

  1. Tell us the unit and what you need

Share your current unit, whether the goal is keeping up with the course, preparing for a unit test, or reviewing for the AP exam itself, and how much time you have before the deadline that matters to you.

  2. We look for a tutor who teaches this course

The team reviews the request and looks for a tutor familiar with the AP Chemistry course and its exam format specifically, since AP-style free-response questions are graded differently from a typical class test.

  3. Start with a free demo lesson

Bring a free-response question from a past unit test or practice exam. Working through how to structure a justified answer is one of the most useful things a first session can show you.

Questions

Common questions

Is this for keeping up with the course, or for exam preparation?

Both, and most students need a mix of each at different points in the year. Early in the course, tutoring usually focuses on the current unit; closer to the May exam, it shifts toward timed multiple-choice and free-response practice across all nine units. Say which one you need most right now.

My student knows the chemistry but loses points on free-response questions. Why?

Free-response questions are graded on justifying a claim with evidence, not just arriving at a correct number — a student can understand the chemistry and still lose points for an answer that skips the reasoning the rubric is looking for. A tutor can work specifically on structuring a free-response answer the way the exam expects it.

My student did fine in earlier units but is stuck on thermodynamics and equilibrium. Is that normal?

Very. These two units build directly on each other and on earlier material, and AP free-response questions often combine them in a single question. A tutor can usually identify quickly whether the gap is in one unit or in how the two connect.

Does tutoring help with lab reports and experimental data questions?

Yes — interpreting experimental data and lab-based questions is part of the AP Chemistry exam itself, not just coursework. A tutor can help you read data, evaluate experimental design and answer lab-based free-response questions, without completing graded lab work on your behalf.

Is AP Chemistry tutoring different from your general Chemistry tutoring?

Yes. General Chemistry tutoring covers a standard high school or intro college course; this page is specific to the AP Chemistry course and exam, including its particular free-response format. If your course is not labeled AP, the general Chemistry page is the better starting point.

Are you affiliated with the College Board or the AP program?

No. Prep2Perfection is an independent tutoring service and is not affiliated with or endorsed by the College Board. A tutor can help you learn the course material and practice the exam’s question formats; there is no guarantee of a specific AP score.
